House for a Surfer
Location: Perranporth, Cornwall.
A plain bungalow, minutes from the beach, redesigned around a life lived outdoors and a daily routine that starts with checking the surf report.
-
House for a Surfer takes a traditional single-storey bungalow on a steeply terraced plot in Perranporth and turns it into something the site always had the potential to be. Rather than adding a flat extension at the back, the design steps up the slope across several linked levels, wrapping around a courtyard that pulls daylight and garden views into every floor.
The result feels less like an extension and more like a home that grew from the ground up. Sliding glazed doors open the dining space directly onto the stepped terrace; a new timber-clad upper storey lifts the bedrooms into the light; and a zinc-roofed entrance porch gives the street elevation the presence it always deserved. Inside, a calm, open-plan layout with a galley kitchen, open timber shelving and a loft bedroom with rooflight keeps the atmosphere relaxed and unfussy: a home that's built around a lifestyle.
For sloped and terraced plots in Cornwall, this is exactly the kind of thinking that unlocks a bungalow's hidden potential.
